Study Aim: To explore the fundamental principles, components, operation and facilities of modern telecommunications systems.

Topics covered: The study programme begins by introducing the fundamental principles of telecoms technology and then provides an overview of the facilities and capabilities of modern telecommunications systems. The topics you then study in this programme depends on your chosen specialisation (see unit titles below).

What you need before beginning this programme: Although not obligatory, the study of Physics at secondary (high) school level will aid your understanding of the principles covered in the study programme.

Learning hours: 90

Unit titles (all learners study Units 1 and 2, then one of the remaining units):

Unit 1 "Fundamental principles of digital communications"

Unit 2 "Telecoms networks and services"

Then choose one of:

Unit 3 "Principles, characteristics and applications of data communications"

Unit 4 "Principles and operation of telephone networks"

Unit 5 "Principles and operation of mobile communications systems"

Unit 6 "Fixed line broadband access to online services"

PTT Level 3 Certificate in Unified Communications

Study Aim: To describe the fundamental principles, protocols, components, applications, testing, and security aspects of unified communications systems.

Topics covered: The study programme begins by introducing the fundamentals of analogue and digital transmission, data communications and the different types of cabling and connectivity. Learners continue with a study of LANs and WANs including diagnostic tests. The programme concludes by ensuring the learner appreciates the services a unified communications system provides and understands how such a system meets the requirements of different types of traffic and ensures data and system security.

What you need before beginning this programme: Although not obligatory, the study of Physics at secondary (high) school level will aid your understanding of the principles covered in the study programme.

Learning hours: 125

Unit titles (all learners study these three units):

Unit 1 "Principles of electronic communications"

Unit 2 "Data communication networks"

Unit 3 "Communications services and security"
