The "PTT Level 3 Award in Principles of Telecommunications" study programme is aimed at those who are new to telecommunications and require an overview of the technical aspects of telecoms service provision. The core units cover the fundamental principles of electronic communications and provide an overview of the systems that are employed by service providers. The specialisation unit then focusses on the principles of mobile communications networks, or fixed line telephony, or wide area networks, or fixed line broadband, depending on your specialisation choice.
Instead of employing different types of network, many telecoms operators are now carrying the traffic generated by all types of service including telephony, broadband services, and business data communications, over one next generation network (NGN).
The "PTT Level 3 Certificate in Unified Communications" online study programme is aimed at technicians who will be working on a telecommunications NGN. As these core networks employ the same techniques and technologies as the Internet, modern wide area networks and local area networks, the programme is also suitable for those responsible for fault finding on, and the general maintenance of, such networks.
Which study programme is best for me?
If you are new to telecoms and want an appreciation of the provision of the various types of telecommunications service, while understanding in more detail the technologies underpinning a specific service, then the "PTT Level 3 Award in Principles of Telecommunications" is ideal.
If you want to focus on networks that employ the Internet protocol (IP) then the study of the "PTT Level 3 Certificate in Unified Communications" will provide an in depth understanding of all aspects of the operation, protection and maintenance of such networks.
PTT study programmes are an ideal way of delivering the knowledge component of Level 3 Information Communications Technician apprenticeships. The programme you choose depends on which option of the apprenticeship standard you intend to follow.
